Now in its 24th year, Make A Difference Day is the largest national day of community service – a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. On this day, millions of Americans will come together in a common mission to improve their communities. And, we're standing up to do the same in our community!

Held annually on the fourth Saturday of October, millions worldwide are rallied into a single day of action to give back to their communities, and help change the world. On October 25th, our greater Gig Harbor & Key Peninsula community will unite with millions of volunteers worldwide in a common mission to improve the lives of others – and we’re hoping that you will join us for the 2nd Annual GHKP Make A Difference Day event at Sehmel Homestead Park. This year PenMet Parks, the City of Gig Harbor, and volunteers from Joint Base Lewis-McChord have joined to support the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation to help us make an even bigger impact in our greater peninsula community. At our first GHKP Make A Difference Day in 2013, 85 volunteers from 15 organizations came together to collect nearly 400 pounds of food and over $10,000 for area food banks, Food Backpacks 4Kids, and the Thanksgiving Basket Brigade – in addition to coats and blankets for those in need of warmth during the cold winter months. At a minimum, we plan to double our impact this year! Area organizations will again have the opportunity to have a booth for receiving donations, sharing information about available services, current projects, community initiatives, and volunteer opportunities. Download Booth Application and information pack today!  Registration closes: October 15th Space is limited. Booths will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. From 10 am to 3 pm on October 25, 2014 volunteers from dozens of community organizations will again join forces to make a difference in our community – and we’re challenging our community to join in helping to set a Guinness World Record. The plan is simple, fun, and all ages can help build the largest maze of donated canned food (EVER)!    After the event, all food will go to area organizations that help feed area families in need. And, we’ll be in the running for one of 14 $10,000 grants from Newman’s Own to help us make an even bigger impact.

During Make A Difference Day 2014, the Foundation will also launch the "Removing Barriers" project.

This important initiative will facilitate the inclusion of persons with disabilities in all aspects of community life. The goal, to raise $50,000 to purchase ADA compliant temporary Mobi-Mat RecPath surfacing. The durable system, made of 100% recycled and recyclable material, is an approved ADA temporary surface. It can be rolled out and staked in place for an event over grass, mud, sand/gravel, and other rough terrain to allow wheelchairs and people with mobility issues to easily navigate, then rolled up and stored for future use. Community events, park, trail and beach clean-up projects, plays, and other outdoor activities provide opportunities that encourage people to have fun, participate in their community, connect with each other, and contribute to the community's strength. Sadly, many with disabilities cannot participate due terrain barriers of public spaces where such events are held. Access is a key first step to equal opportunity for meaningful participation!
