GGHF Curious by Nature School, is part of the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation (GGHF) a qualified 50I(c)(3) charitable nonprofit organization serving the greater Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula community. The 2021-22 school year marks our 10th year providing nature-based outdoor early childhood education program that supports children’s social-emotional, physical, and intellectual development.
CBNS is an inclusive community welcoming all children and all families. We serve children ages 2 to 6, and enrichment for school-aged children, offering hybrid indoor/outdoor classes and all-outdoor classes.
Children are innately curious! At GGHF Curious by Nature School, we follow the child-centered Reggio Emilia philosophy where observations and discoveries of the natural world around us drive the emergent curriculum in our classrooms.
What Sets us Apart?
Our one-of-a-kind program brings kids closer to nature in a way that supports their discovery of the wonders of the world we live in. Focusing on the whole child, our emergent curriculum promotes opportunities for children to learn about seasons, plants, animals, ecosystems, weather, habitats, people, and cultures - while developing the following skills:
- Critical thinking skills - essential for life long learners!
- Building Resilience
In addition to our emergent curriculum, we use the following:
- Growing Up WILD™ -
- Get Set For School™ (Handwriting Without Tears™)
- Project Learning Tree ™
Curriculum activities are correlated to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) standards and the Head Start domains.
Daily hands-on experiences include:
- Outdoor play – everyday, rain or shine!
- Environmental science experiences
- Process art
- Language and literacy activities
- Large and small motor activities
- Music and movement
In addition to our daily explorations in our outdoor classroom, we take regular nature walks in the Adam Tallman Nature Park, a protected wetland preserve maintained by the City of Gig Harbor. Children are exposed daily to a wide variety of native plant and animal habitats.
